Post Convocation Ceremony Reflections

Comments of Massarrat bint Suleman

As Salaamu alaykum wa rahmatullahi wa barakatuh

When I started listening to the graduation ceremony last week, I felt so inspired and motivated. I wished I was one of the sisters who had completed her course, ready for the next step in her study.

In our lives, we come across so many situations where people make you hear 'success stories', and they will tell you one or two, and you can almost tell that they had to really work hard to find the stories to show that the work they are doing is of some significance. Here I listened to one sister after another, one story following another, each more inspiring, each more touching that the one before. There seemed to be as many stories as there were people and it reminded me how Qur'an can enrich our lives, how Allah guides whomever He wills and makes a way for those who rely on Him.

MashaAllah, Allah has granted Ustaza the tawfeeq to be quite a visionary. Taleem ul Quran itself is such a comprehensive course, with tajweed, translation, and tafseer. But then I continued to hear about more courses, of Hifdh, Hadith, and courses for kids and teens of various ages. Each course is so well suited to the age group it is designed for.

Many of the Al Huda courses are so intensive and demanding. One imagines that at the end of the course, students would feel like they needed a break... yet Al-Huda students seem to want to stay connected... with the Qur'an, with Al-Huda, and with the sisters they have befriended.

May Allah give you tawfeeq to do more in His path, and may He guide all those who seek knowledge.

Comments of Sana Qureshi

Assalaamu Alaikum Dear Ustaza,

The convocation ceremony today was such a wonderful experience, that I had to convey this to you! The organization of the volunteers, the attention to every detail (including the new banners), the program and presentations, everything was so well done, allhumdulilllah!! What an amazing thing that so many students have gained understanding of the Qur'an in English, by Allah grace, and can now serve their community insha' Allah.

This was the first ceremony I have attended as a real student, and I felt so lucky to be there. Jazakallah khairun kaseera Ustaza for all your efforts and for being such a great teacher to us all; May Allah reward you immensely and make your ongoing mission easy for you. I was especially impressed by your English skills! My dear Ustaza you spoke so well in English; you were articulate, clear, you conveyed your message very well and as always it was a pleasure to hear you speak! We are so lucky to have you here with us. May Allah continue to increase us in our Iman, and continue learning our deen.

Your very grateful student

Comments of Sophia Awan (Current Taleem al Qur'an Incharge)

Asalamu alaykum wa rahmatAllahi wa Barakatuhu,

It has been a great honour and pleasure for me to have been a student of the first batch of Taleem al Qur’an English. I am truly humbled to have been a part of one of the best Islamic educational Institutes out there for women and also to have met such strong sisters who truly love each other for the sake and pleasure of Allah (swt). But most importantly, I feel blessed that Allah gave me the opportunity to learn His book. It is only through the Qur’an that I have learnt the true meaning and significance of Taqwa, patience and gratitude to Allah.

Interestingly enough, it was through a du’a that I made to Allah that I found about the Taleem al Qur’an course. For long, I wanted to study directly from the qur’an – to know my Creator and His words. A question always remained in my head: How can I call myself a muslim when I do not even know what my Creator wants from me. What was the point of me simply reciting the Qur’an without even knowing what I am reciting? So I began attending Friday halaqas which were conducted by Sr.Rushda where I got a glimpse of Taleem al Qur’an. But attending a Qur’an class once a week was just not enough. I wanted more—In fact, I needed more. I asked Allah to grant me the opportunity to study His book full-time. I still remember the day when Sr.Rushda announced of the upcoming Taleem al Qur’an course which was to start in September of 2007. I was especially overjoyed when I discovered this course would be in English. It is then that I decided that I would take a break from University and dedicate the next 16 months of my life towards the study of Qur’an.

These 16 months have opened a world of knowledge to me that I did not know existed. And yet, I have only scratched the surface and In sha Allah, this is only the beginning of a life long journey towards seeking knowledge of this beautiful and true faith.

On the last day of our course, Dec 31, 2008, with countless emotions running through me, I took a moment to ask myself: “I wonder what Allah (swt) has planned for me next”. It is at that moment when I made du’a to Allah again. I asked Him: “Oh Allah, keep me connected with the Qur’an and surround me by righteous people”. Little did I know that with this du’a I would be doing what I am doing today. And truly, Allah knows of all things, and we know not.
As I stand before all of you today, I can tell you that Allah has again, given me the opportunity to remain connected with the Qur’an, be surrounded by righteous company and given me the ability to use my skills in the way of the deen.

We often crib and complain about how our Islamic communities and institutes are not progressing or growing. The progression comes to a halt when we do not follow up our words with action. If you want to see positive change, you must take an initiative and make a conscious effort to be a part of the change. So today, I want to challenge each and everyone of you, whether you are a guest, student and especially a graduate, to dig deep into your heart and realize that your community needs you, the deen needs you… This institute needs your unique talents and skills for it to continue to flourish and grow bi idnillahi ta’ala. There is a growing need for Qur’anic education in the community. To all graduating students today, you have spent 16 months learning the Book of Allah, now it is your turn to start teaching and serving His Deen in whatever capacity that Allah has blessed you with.

I will conclude with a reminder from the Qur’an:

Here you are – those invited to spend in the cause of Allah – but among you are those who withhold. And whoever withholds only withholds benefit from himself; and Allah is Free of need, while you are the needy. And if you turn away, He will replace you with another people; then they will not be the likes of you. (Muhmmad:38)

Comments of Saeeda Raoof

Assalam-o-alikum,
Dearest Ustazah,

Aap kiasi hain? May Allah SWT keep you & your family in His Hifz-o-Amaan, Ameen.

Alhamd-o-lillah, I have reached home safely. My husband was waiting for me :). I enjoyed my stay and the time I spent at the campus as much as I did last year, Alhamd-o-lilah. I am very very grateful of Allah SWT that he chose me and gave me such a great opportunity to serve his deen (even though I am not an expert IT person) not too many people get this chance.

Alhamd-o-lillah, I was able to submit all results, and able to print all certificates on time. I could not have done it without the help & support of our “R&E Team” (Shireen Javali, Sarah Nadeem, Sabahat Rahim, & Seemien Tahir) and staff at the campus. All of them worked very hard and behaved very professionally, Masha-Allah.

Alhamd-o-lillah, I enjoyed meeting Shazia. I don’t get too many chances to see her, except at the convocation. Masha-Allah, she is always very supportive and helpful.

I also enjoyed working with Rifaqh Aunty. I always learn something from her. Last year I learned how to be calm and cool under stressful conditions. This year, I learned how to implement decisions as soon as possible. During different meetings, we were making several decisions and she was ready to implement those right on the spot without any delay, and I saw her implementing those very swiftly, without making any confusion, it was very impressive for me. I hope one day I can work like this. Insha-Allah.

I could not spend more time with Yasmeen Baji to learn personally and directly from her. May Allah SWT give us Tawfeeqh and more opportunities to do that, Ameen.

I always remember personal attention I received from Mubeen Aunty even though she was the busiest person doing so many things at a time, still she managed to give personal attention to everyone. During last days of convocation I was working late, she asked me “Saeeda bayta khana khayia” I was really touched by her sentence, she cares so much that she personally asked me if I have eaten or not.

I always love to meet Samita Baji, she has so much love & warmth in her heart for me. I always felt very close to her, Alhamd-o-lillah. She is always very welcoming doesn’t matter if she is in Dubai or Toronto.

For last two days of the convocation, I was working with Br. Zaid Masha-Allah, he was very helping and supportive, he is a very good trainer &  has a lot Sabar too. We were working together to get 300 certificates and envelops printed, he never made a single complaint about anything, or even frown.

I really enjoyed the warm welcome and the hospitality I received from you Ustazah and everybody else. Like last year everybody at the campus (Mubeen Aunty, Rifqah Aunty, Samitha Baji, Rakhsilaa Baji, Fouzia Baji, Riffat Baji, Shamsa Baji, Shaidah Baji, Khalida Baji, Shahla Hussain, Rahat Aman, Aasiya Annie, Rushdah, Taymiyya, Asfia, Rubi ) also gave me such a warm welcome one more time which I cannot describe in words, Alhamd-o-lilah.

With the help & Rahmah of Allah SWT, and your support & help, Masha-Allah! Aasiya, and Rahat did the great job organizing our Convocation. It was perfect and even better than last year, AH.

Dear Ustazah, I would to make some suggestion for next year convocation Insha-Allah, I will write you in separate email. I am sorry Ustazah, I took too much of your time but I had to express my feeling :). Jazak-Allah-Khair for your time and listening to me.

May Allah SWT accept all of our efforts and give a lot of Barakah in our time and efforts, Ameen. May Allah SWT keep us united, Ameen.

Jazak-Allah-Khair Dear Ustazah for giving me such a great opportunity to work with you and learn from you. May Allah SWT give me more opportunities like this, Ameen. Please remember us in your duas.

Please Ustazah forgive me if I have made any mistake or have done something wrong.

Wasalam

Comments of Yasmin Khakwani, (Al Huda's Northern Regional Director , Islamabad)

Alhamdolillah I got a chance to witness the Convocation on 27th June, 2009, in Toronto, Canada and I would like to share it with all the Dear Ones.

It was a simple, graceful, elegant, well attended and well organized affair. Each and every minute detail was well thought of and well planned. The team work under Ustazah's supervision was evident everywhere.

Arrangements

The hall was as simple and as neat as it could have been. Simple board  behind the stage read "Graduation" and above that is a big permanent board in the Hall with   اهْدِنَا الصِّرَاطَ الْمُسْتَقِيمَ written on it. On the both sides, information about Regular Courses was displayed.

There were no fresh flower arrangements, no coloured banners or displays except for one simple Graduation Board  behind the stage which can be used all the time as no date is written on it. This is saving and utilizing the resources carefully.

A single vase with artificial flower arrangement at the bottom of stage and one at Guests Table was the entire decoration as Ustazah  had strictly banned use of fresh flowers and had told the staff that even if fresh flowers  costs one dollar, it should go to the IDPS of Swat. This hall is actually the Mosque but is also used for multi purposes. So, the main area had white sheets covering the carpets and the students were sitting on the floor.

Students

The graduates were On Campus as well as Online. The Online students had traveled from far off areas and although traveling here is extremely expensive, yet most of them had flown over from USA. Some had driven down with their families and spent at least two nights on their own in Toronto. These also include Online staff who had come at least a week earlier to compile and finalize the results, help in Certificates etc.

The current students were in different scarves depicting their courses like the On Campus Graduates in Pretty Pink, the Online Graduates in Bonny Blue, the Current students in Winsome White. Behind the graduates and current students were the guests seated on chairs. The hall had accommodated more than six/seven hundred people  and four other rooms were also accommodating the guests and screens in those areas were showing the Main Hall activities.

The sound system was excellent and there were many mics on stands in a row to be used for individuals and group presentations. Each time the mic needed to be adjusted according to the height of speaker, Ustazah herself would leave her chair and smilingly adjust it herself without the help of any staff!

Children Room with Volunteers was a facility for the mothers who loved to sneak out on and off to see the actual Convocation in main Hall.

Guests Seating

On both sides of the stage were two very long tables with crisp white linen and brown chairs. One was for the Chief Guest and other guests and other  table opposite was for the staff from Canada, USA and Pakistan. It seemed that we all form a Global Family!.

Water bottles on clean wrapped tissues were placed in front of each guest. Katherine Bullock, a convert and professor of local University was the chief Guest, a local MPA and some guests from Pakistan Embassy were all seated on the table near the door. Mubeen Qureshi, Chairperson of Al Huda Canada was receiving and attended these guests.

Ceremony

It had the Spiritual aspect, Educational Session and Motivation through the glimpses of personal experiences and various activities performed in and through Al Huda Canada.

Before the Ceremony started and while guests were arriving, takbeeraat, Asma e Husna and some other  recitations were played .

The Ceremony started with the recitation of Surah Al Hadeed selected versus by heart touching recitation of Asma Zubair. After that there was more of spiritualism in the ceremony. The Hadith " Kalemataan Habeebataan  .." was played as a nasheed and people were asked by Usatzah to repeat the tasbeeh occasionally .when they would repeat it together, the atmosphere was enveloped with serenity and peace as if everything around it had also joined .Thus glorifying Allah swt created a Sakeenah in the environment till the Peace shrouded the entire atmosphere and the hearts.

After that  different activities conducted in Al Huda were presented by the students of that particular group. This gave glimpses of different activities to thse audience and was a source of motivation for them.

The little children reciting Asma e Surah, the elderly  ladies from Hifz Section  together gave a demonstration of the Hifz as a group. Young Girls from High School level, ( about 13-14 years old) from their Course shared the word to word translation activity and proved that if this group gets a chance, they all have the love of Quran.

Most motivating individual was the Somalian Lady Lulu, who did not even know English nor knew how to read and write Arabic a year back but through hard work ,day and night efforts to acquire the Understanding of Quran, she learnt how to read Arabic and understanding of Quran in English.  Along with that , she also taught her five years old daughter who repeated the translation of Al Asr in front of the audience. Then she read out a self written poem on "Quran is my Freind" .After the Ceremony she was replying to people in Urdu as well. So she proved that if one has the thirst of Knowledge and works hard then language is not a barrier.

Another young Polish Convert shared her experiences and her Journey in Search of The Truth. Born in Poland in Communist era where religious freedom was very limited. As a Christian, she went for a Pilgrimage to another town which had a Cathedral. They had to walk as a group from dawn to dusk every day to reach there. The relatives and others had requested her to pray for them as she was going for a "Good Deed i.e. Pilgrimage". Once she reached there, the worship was to make a tawaaf of the statue of Mary and Jesus, she was compelled to think that how can these statues be the God and many such questions arose in her mind that they had travelled so far with such hardships just to see stone statues who are so helpless themselves. So she started pondering over many things and started having questions about her religion which somehow seemed to be not correct.

She was not satisfied with the theory of Trinity  and so she kept on striving hard to find the Truth  till she went to London for studies. There she met a group of Muslims who had discussion with her and finally she was convinced that Islam was the right Deen. Thus finally Allah swt gave her the Light. Now married and a Muslim, she is studying in Al Huda and is pregnant and comes changing three buses to reach alhuda, few months old every day to acquire the Knowledge and said she has found the Truth through Quran. She had been a Muslim since ten years and travelled to Sharjah to acquire the understanding of Quran but could not find it anywhere till she came to Al Huda, Canada. Her native language was Polish and she was unable to read Quran in Arabic here ,even English Translation was difficult but Al Huda Canada not only helped her in reading and understanding the Quran but also taught her how to read and write Arabic and improved her English language skills as well.

The Chief Guest Dr Katherine Bullock, herself a convert, related her live experience of conversion and highlighted the fact that Muslims have to work hard so that the Message may reach all. She said that once she was helping with Muslim Children Summer School and she asked the Muslim Children as to who was Abraham and the spontaneous reply from all Muslim Children was " The First President of USA". She said she was shocked at Muslim Children ignorance and highlighted the need that Al Huda Graduates and other Muslims should reach the masses.

In between these activities, Usatzah and Rushda, stage secretary would read form the book, "Life of  Imaam Bukhari", and this book was gifted already  to all the guests and students. So, the gift was fully utilized and the audience had a learning session in the Convocation.

A presentation about Al Huda was showed by brother Imraan, covering the beginning till the current Al Huda activities in the World. Shazia Nawaz gave the background of starting Online Course and most of the work performed by Al Huda was given representation in this ceremony. Yasmin gave a briefing of Al Huda network in Pakistan and in the International Division. Rifqah Asghar gave the prizes to the few prize holders.

Mubeen Qureshi and Shamsa thanked the guests and participants.

At the end, Azaan was given by a very young boy and his beautiful voice reminded everybody to offer the Salaah Zuhr together.

Thus the objectives of the Convocation were achieved and I saw many guest in tears due to the motivation they got in it.The guests were from Pakistan Embassy ,local MP and some from Educational Institutes. The most amazing aspect was that the Guest who came for the first time went back with tears at being deprived of the Naimah of Quran.

So, it is a fact that 'Quran is for All' and it must "Reach every hand and every heart".

It was very inspiring to see so many Muslims flocking to this Platform and offering their gratitude to Allah swt who has blessed them with this facility in such a country where they as a family can learn and act upon Islam easily.

I had a lot of learning from this Graceful, simple and auspicious Ceremony and I pray to Allah swt that  He may accept it from all and make it a Sadqa e Jariyah for Ustazah, Sir and the entire team and supporters. Ameen

I also thought that if one continues  with sincere efforts in Allah's swt Way, He facilitates ,even if one is in  a strange soil and amongst unknown people.

Al Huda Canada is a source of inspiration and may Allah swt make it a center of Learning for the Generations to come and may many benefit from these efforts. Ameen
